ROOT – Rural Opportunities and Outreach for Tomorrow

Root is an Erasmus+ initiative designed to empower young people by building stronger connections between urban and rural communities, promoting sustainable development, and opening new opportunities in agrotourism and green innovation. The project recognises that many rural areas across Europe and neighbouring regions hold significant untapped potential — rich nature, local products, traditional knowledge, and strong community ties. At the same time, young people in urban settings often lack meaningful exposure to rural environments and the chance to contribute to their development.

Root brings together young people from different countries and enables them to explore how modern technologies, social innovation, and sustainable approaches can support the revitalisation of rural spaces. Through interactive activities, practical workshops, and international collaboration, participants discover new ways to strengthen their communities and foster positive change.

What the Project Offers to Youth and Communities?

Root encourages young people to develop creativity, entrepreneurial thinking, and the ability to identify local challenges and transform them into new opportunities. The project highlights the potential that emerges when:

  • traditional rural skills and knowledge are combined with digital tools

  • sustainable practices are applied in agrotourism and local business development

  • youth are directly involved in designing solutions for their communities

  • organisations from different countries collaborate on shared initiatives

Throughout the project, participants will gain insights into good practices and acquire practical skills in sustainable tourism, digital literacy, communication, and community-based project planning. At the same time, Root strengthens the capacity of youth organisations to better support young people in the future.

Why Root Matters?

Rural areas across Europe and neighbouring regions face depopulation, limited opportunities, and a lack of innovation. Root responds to these challenges by:

  • empowering young people as active contributors to local development

  • promoting sustainability, green practices, and long-term thinking

  • fostering social cohesion and cultural exchange

  • motivating youth to reconnect with their local environments and recognise their value

The project encourages young people to see rural spaces not as places people leave, but as environments full of potential for innovation, collaboration, and meaningful careers.

International dimension

Root is implemented through a diverse partnership spanning Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. This wide range of experiences and perspectives enhances the project’s impact. Different cultural approaches, models of rural development, and youth work practices allow Root to create materials and activities that are adaptable and relevant across various local contexts.

Participants work in international teams, take part in study visits, and learn from each other, while organisations exchange methods and strengthen their existing programmes.
